Cuyp, Ruisdael, Hobbema, and Potter
Melville acquired Frank Cundall’s The Landscape and Pastoral Painters of Holland in 1891, the year it was published, and the last year of his life, when he was still revising “At the Hostelry,” his poetic colloquy among Old Master painters (Sealts no. 169). Whereas Melville’s copy of Gower’s The Figure Painters of Holland, published in 1880, covered twelve figure painters, his copy of Cundall’s book covered only four landscape and pastoral painters. Unlike like many of the Dutch artists in Melville’s print collection, Cuyp, Ruisdael, Hobbema, and Potter had not yet been well represented, even in 1891, in the growing collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum. Nor do any of these artists appear in the unfinished manuscript of “At the Hostelry.” But Melville collected one or more prints by each. He had access to substantial, illustrated essays on each in the copy of The Works of Eminent Masters he acquired in 1871. And he could have seen paintings by each of those artists during his visits to museums and galleries in England, France, Italy, and the Netherlands in 1849 and 1857.
