See our Guide to Use of Catalog for detailed information about the structure of this site.
Here we want to emphasize how to navigate the two display areas for each catalog (CAT) entry. You will access each entry on the Exhibit level, where an image of the print that Melville owned is accompanied by a caption and an interpretive essay.
Clicking on the image of the print itself will take you to the Catalog level, where you will find a detailed Print Identification, the source of our digital image, and a roving zoom function which enables you to zoom in on details of the print.
The Catalog level also includes tags which link elements in each print with their appearance in other prints from Melville’s collection, and a Browse by Melville’s Writings function that connects any reference to a work by Melville with discussions of the same work in other entries.
